Include police service dogs in the police pension plan

The Issue

Unlike their human colleagues, police service dogs are not given the option to receive a pension upon their retirement from public service. This leaves these brave animals without the ability to retire comfortably after years of service to the citizens of Delta. Many retired police service dogs end up having to take on a new job after their retirement in order to make ends meet which is grossly unfair. The situation was recently brought to light by an eye opening article in the Delta Optimist newspaper which exposed this injustice.

A direct quote from the article:

"Unlike their handlers, police dogs don’t have pensions, and often have significant medical needs later in life due to the physical stresses of their former jobs."

We are asking that Mayor Harvey immediately includes all police service dogs into the police pension in order to ensure that they are able to enjoy their retirement without financial worry.
