Why this petition matters

Started by Project of Heart - Regina Group
We are, as concerned citizens, requesting action by 3 levels of govenment to act upon preserving, with the help of local First Nation groups and bands, in protecting the Regina Indian Industrial School Cemetery. We urge our leaders to act now to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada's Call to Action #75. "We call upon the Federal Government to work with Provincial, Territorial and Municipal governments, churches, Aboriginal Communities, former residential school students, and current landowners to develop and implement strategies and procedures for the ongoing identification, documentation, maintenance, commemoration, and protection of residential school cemeteries or other sites at which residential school children were buried.  This is to include the provision of appropriate memorial ceremonies and commemorative markers to honour the deceased children." We recognize that Canadian colonial history has negatively impacted the lives of Indigenous people in many different ways.  We have chosen to direct our concerns to the implementation of the Indian Residential (Industrial) School System and the negligence associated with it; specifically, in regards to missing children and burial information associated with the Regina Indian Industrial School.
