The Ben Boeke Ice Arena was closed as a temporary homeless shelter and reopened for winter sports after many citizens of Anchorage, Alaska protested it in the name of hockey. The homeless population is expected to increase by as much as 50% and many more people will experience unemployment due to COVID-19. Housing the homeless takes precedent over winter sports; no one should have to sleep in a car in below-freezing temperatures or stay in an over-crowded shelter during a pandemic. We urge the city to reinstate the arena as a temporary homeless shelter for the winter months.
