Congratulations! Thanks to the hard work of you and other community members, the San Mateo City Council recently approved a resolution lowering speed limits around 38 schools in SM city limits. This is an important step in reducing the number of crashes involving kids that walk or bike to school. As a result, we hope to see more kids walking or biking to school in the future, reducing traffic congestion on and around campuses. We couldn't have done it without your help. With 500+ signatures, it was apparent to the Council that this was important to a large and diverse constituency. Thanks especially to those of you who spoke directly to the Council, shared the petition with family and friends, and donated to support promotion of the petition to additional community members. We are lucky to have such a forward thinking Mayor and City Council that recognizes the importance of slower streets and improving the quality of life in the neighborhoods around our schools. Big thanks, especially, to Mayor Eric Rodriguez who signed our petition, spoke thoughtfully on the subject to other Council members, and ultimately brought forward the resolution for a vote. Thank you to Councilmembers Bonilla, Lee, Goethals, and Papan, who also supported the resolution. Unfortunately the fight for safer and calmer streets will need to continue. After 100+ years of prioritizing auto speeds over resident safety, the City is making important steps to make our streets more livable. Many SM schools, including Aragon, Bowditch, Meadow Heights, and Nueva will not see reductions in speed limits through this resolution. We will need to work together to find other solutions to improve safety on the streets around these campuses - e.g., traffic calming on Alameda. In addition, we will need more bike lanes to allow kids to bike to school without mixing directly with traffic - e.g., the current plan for bike lanes on Humboldt and Poplar. We will keep you posted on these efforts. Thank you again for your support for safer streets around our schools and we hope to see you on foot or bike around campus in the near future!!!
