Thank you again for your support of safer streets around our schools.  We now need your help to save another initiative that will increase safety for kids biking to schools in San Mateo.  Please sign this petition to save the planned bike lanes next to San Mateo High and College Park Elementary Schools

Per its most recent Bicycle Master Plan, the City of San Mateo has developed an ambitious vision to reduce the number of cyclist fatalities and serious injuries through a connected network of bicycle facilities.  This plan includes the North Central Bike Lanes Project, which would add bike lanes on Poplar Avenue and Humboldt Street and a bike boulevard on Indian Avenue.  North Central has potential for a significant mix of traffic to switch from auto to bike travel if supporting bike infrastructure exists.  The neighborhood is densely populated.  There are currently a large number of bicycle crashes given the lack of bike infrastructure.  In addition, City studies have demonstrated that the neighborhood possesses sufficient additional free parking to compensate for spaces that are converted to bike lanes.  Finally, the neighborhood is in a Community Development Block Grant area and thus the project qualifies for $1 million in federal funding.

Again, we hope that you will sign the petition to prevent these bike lanes from being removed from the City's plans.  With your help, we can make the streets around schools safer for kids that want to get active and help the environment by biking to and from campus each day.

Thanks for your help,

Mike Swire & the Silicon Valley Bicycle Coalition San Mateo Team
