English Version

A parcel of land eyed as the proposed site for a Sanitary Landfill has been inspected by the Technical Working Group and Appraisal Team accompanied by Officials of The Municipality of Valencia and representatives from The City of Dumaguete sent by Mayor Felipe Antonio "Ipe" Remollo last Friday, July 21, 2017.

The Proposed site is located in Barangay Malaunay, up in the hinterlands of Valencia. A barangay that is being promoted as a potential tourist destination in Valencia.

The Problem:
The place is situated within the Mount Talinis area in proximity to Rivers, Springs, and areas which are deemed as a haven for both flora and fauna. As if the exploitation brought about by the continued expansion of EDC, conversion of forest lands into farms, and destruction of whatever watershed we have left is not enough, the aforementioned LGU's are now proposing to establish yet another unpleasant addition to the contributing factors of the floods that we face whenever heavy rains come (sometimes it doesn't even require rains to be heavy anymore).

Putting a Landfill up in the mountains of Valencia does not only affect Valencianons. It affects every single community that the fumes and rubbish will be carried to by air and flooding. More than an Environmental Concern, this is a Health Issue that should be discussed and examined carefully. To what benefits are we putting our residents in Valencia at risk in exchange for turning our town into the DUMPSITE of a CITY and a few other Municipalities?

We demand that a proper consultation with the people of Valencia be done. We demand for a full and transparent disclosure of the effects of this landfill. And we demand for better alternatives to the growing waste problem of Valencia, Dumaguete, and all other LGU's concerned.

We demand that we look after our own trash, not to our neighbors, not in Valencia.

If we want to see an example of how this can fail, visit the existing dumpsite at Barangay Candau-ay.

If we don't want Malaunay, or any part of Valencia to become another Candau-ay, sign this petition. Let our Mayor(s) know that you are not in favor of this proposal.

Together, we can keep Valencia CHADA!
