Continue the freedom to BBQ in Prospect Park Brooklyn

Continue the freedom to BBQ in Prospect Park Brooklyn
The Issue
Dear Mayor de Blasio, Borough President Adams, I understand that there is a petition to ban the recreational event that takes place during the spring and summer known as the family barbecue in Prospect Park. I am a life long resident of Brooklyn, I do not have access to a back yard and use the parks for this great old American tradition of family gatherings for fun filled events around a BBQ. I live in the Clinton Hill area and have had to see one of the harsh realities of gentrification when it comes to Ft Greene Park where families cannot walk through in the mornings because the dogs are not relegated to a specific location for a dog run, but have access to the entire park unleashed until 9am. Many dog owners do not clean up behind their animals or leash their animals after said time as well. BBQ's were enjoyed in Ft Greene Park on both sides every summer now it is permitted only on the Myrtle Ave side where there is no grass, minimal trees and grills, many of the events such as the DJ dance party were suspended or cancelled, the Michael Jackson birthday celebration had to be relocated to Prospect Park all because of some who not only do not respect the culture of the areas they move into but marginalize and disregard the importance of recreational access to parks since many do not have the finances to go to out to state parks or have back yards. I implore you to take into consideration the concerns of thousands of Brooklyn residents who pay taxes to use the parks as a outdoor gathering for food, friends and family and reject this request to ban BBQ'S in Prospect Park! More canisters for charcoal disposal is needed, that would greatly reduce the concern on the environment. It is important that our new neighbors understand the diverse areas that they have moved into. Our city is welcoming, however in order to sustain an atmosphere of inclusivity and respect old traditions need to be sustained.
