Matthew McCrury started this petition to Mayor David Turner and

Currently in the city of Odessa,TX there is a city ordinance that restricts citizens of the city from having chickens on their property. I seek to change that within reason. I am requesting that the ban be lifted and citizens be allowed to possess, at minimum, a total of 6 adult hens with no restriction on chicks. I would request that the citizens be mandated to provide a coop with laying boxes as well a chicken run for the chickens, as well as the property in which the chickens are on must have a complete fence around the back yard. It should be required that the chickens have wing(s) clipped to prevent them from flying the fence.

Chickens provide eggs almost daily after reaching maturity and also provide meat for those who choose to raise them. They eliminate pests wherever they find them and even their feces can be used as good fertilizer for our soil and gardens. Allowing the citizens this right would give them the ability to become self sufficient and supplement the lack of available resources at the stores, like we are experiencing now with the Covid 19 crisis. It would allow them to produce and sustain organic, nutritious food.  It would allow them to educate their children and show them where their food comes from and teach them responsibility in the care of such a valuable resource. These are only a few of the vast benefits these wonderful birds provide.

Cities such as Austin, Dallas, Corpus Christi, Houston, Midland and many, many others have already made the move to allow their citizens this right. I believe the great city of Odessa, TX should do the same.
