Help Us Save the Coconut Grove Playhouse

Miami-Dade County & FIU are seeking approval from the City of Miami to demolish more than 83% of the historic, structurally sound Coconut Grove Playhouse. The County wants to replace it with retail/office space and a small 300-seat auditorium—a size that would not attract the off-Broadway productions the Playhouse previously featured.

Please join our efforts to save this historic cultural icon of Coconut Grove from demolition efforts by the County and sign this petition. Your voice matters.

Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Coconut Grove Playhouse deserves preservation not only for its historic architecture but for the magic that happened within its walls.  It is a signature building that reflects the heyday of Coconut Grove.

The Coconut Grove Playhouse was once the center of the Miami theater scene. The historic landmark opened in 1927 and was noted for its elaborate architecture and large size. In 1955, under the hand of noted architect Alfred Browning Parker, the Playhouse was updated to become one of the most important regional theaters in the country, attracting the best entertainment for all in Miami to enjoy.

The Playhouse has played host to many of theater's most renowned performers, including Maureen Stapleton, Hume Cronyn, Jessica Tandy, Eve Arden, Tallulah Bankhead, Carol Channing, Liza Minnelli, Linda Lavin, Bea Arthur, George C. Scott, Colleen, Ethel Merman, Raúl Esparza, and Denzel Washington.
