Keep Cordova Safe started this petition to Mayor Clay Koplin and the City of Cordova

In the face of the global COVID-19 pandemic, we the people of Cordova petition Mayor Clay Koplin and the City of Cordova to exercise the municipality’s maximum authority granted by the State of Alaska in the Alaska Small Community Emergency Travel Order, Mandate 012, Attachment B, and restrict all travel into Cordova, with the exception of medical personnel, law enforcement, child protective services, and cargo.

Our public health safety must be the City’s first and foremost priority in the face of this pandemic.

We the people of Cordova are deeply concerned in these uncertain times. Cordova is a vibrant, resourceful, and resilient community. However, with an emerging pandemic, we are also an extremely vulnerable community in terms of medical infrastructure.

With a limited window of time before the salmon season begins, seasonal workers flying in daily, and epidemiological projections that the pandemic will be at its peak within the same time frame the population in town reaches it’s climax, we implore the City of Cordova to halt all travel except for medical personnel, law enforcement, child protective services, and cargo.

While recognizing there may be disruptions to normal commercial fishing and processing operations, we additionally implore the City of Cordova and industry officials to consider potentially unorthodox methods to effectively harvest our salmon resources while maintaining the safety and health of our community first.

None of us has dealt with a pandemic in our lifetimes, but we as a community must rise to the occasion, together, now.
