The newly signed executive order will indefinitely shut down all gyms and fitness centers in Miami-Dade County. The reason--to "protect" our health--is an oxymoron at best, and at worst, unconstitutional to gym members and (especially) gym owners. Exercise is necessary for both physical and mental health, and may actually help in the  fight against COVID-19 by strengthening the immune system. Notably, many other establishments are unjustifiably allowed to remain open (i.e. no health benefit), including nail salons, condominium and hotel pools, and retail stores. Further, gyms can implement preventative measures to minimize the risk of spread of COVID-19. So, until Mayor Carlos Gimenez can provide evidence that the risk of allowing gyms to remain open outweighs the health benefits the gym provides, all gyms in Miami-Dade county must remain open.
