Remove "Division" Street Names in Southern States

The Issue

Streets named "Division" are scattered throughout the South, historically to serve as a border for residential segregation. Orlando's Division Avenue marked a boundary in the Parramore neighborhood, which was built for black residents in the late 1800's. Parramore residents were not allowed to cross to the east after dark.

There is no significant historical relevance to preserve this name. There is no better time to promote inclusion and to rid ourselves with street names that honor segregation and separation. We see the country ridding itself of statues and flags that celebrate oppression. This is no different. The time is now.

We ask the leaders of our community to unify versus divide. We ask our leaders to rid our community of "Division".
