Increase Medford’s Budget Appropriation to Support Medford Public Schools Students

The Issue

As residents and taxpayers, we demand that the city address the severe underfunding of Medford Public Schools.  We stand in support of the joint letter of the Medford School Committee and Superintendent Edouard-Vincent.  We urge you to take their recommendations seriously and prioritize the children of Medford.  Since 2007, the city budget has grown by 47.5% but the school budget has only grown by 39.1%.   It’s time to prioritize our schools!  Take action by doing the following:

  1. Reverse the $3.5M planned budget cut for the 2020-2021 school year to ensure level services can be provided at minimum.
  2. Allocate $2-$3M from the city’s $5M CARES Act funds to prepare Medford Public Schools for next year amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
  3. Fill the $9+ million gap identified by our educators and administrators as outlined in the letter reviewed by the School Committee on 6/25/2020.
  4. Plan now for a future capital project to address Medford High School based on the results of the Medford High Vision Committee which will begin in Fall 2020.
  5. Allocate funding and district resources to the Racial Equity Task Force, empowering the group to act on findings and recommendations to ensure every student experiences inclusion and belonging in Medford schools.
  6.  Stop asking our students and educators to do more with less.  Give our teachers the resources they need to deliver a best in class education.
