Make Jelleff Public: Private Schools Should Not Have Exclusive Rights to Public Fields
Oct 20, 2019

WATCH the Hearing Online - LIVE STREAM 11am tomorrow - please tweet/post #MakeJelleffPublic @JelleffPublic

HEAR the CHILDREN of Jelleff:

  • “Jelleff should be a diverse center not a space to separate us. I as an attendee of Hardy feel as if we are being put less just because private schools want Jelleff only for them and feel disrespected. One thing that could solve this issue is just to simply organize every school that uses Jelleff field to have certain days to come so it could be equal and Jelleff could still be many kids' second home.”
  • “Jelleff has become a home to me and many others. We are honored to have access to Jelleff, a place to feel at home, do homework, and collaborate with others from various schools. Many of my peers and school teachers are devastated with the situation with Maret and private schools only having access to the prime hours at Jelleff.
  • “As stated by a commissioner in DCist, ‘No one has a problem with Maret playing at DPR parks. All we're asking is to share the facility.’ This quote demonstrates how unfair it is that Maret should be able to gain exclusive primetime access to Jelleff, even when Jelleff can be shared.”
  • “The situation with Jelleff Recreation center is way worse than you could think. This may not seem important to you, but this will change D.C. forever. If you allow this public place to be exploited, then other places will be too. You must stop this unfairness! All you have to do is just say “no."
  • My little sister attends Jelleff and She's a second grade and by the time the contract is over my sister will be in the 12th grade and she will never be able to play on that field. The deal between Maret and D.C department of parks and recreation allow Maret exclusive use during the highest demand from 3:30 to 5:30 for the next decade. It's just unfair.
  • I totally don't understand why a decision like this would be made. I guess that the children that attend public school playing outdoors don't matter. Too many children are only interested in computers and video games and this is definitely going to push the children that attend Jelleff more to video games.  We are being robbed of our outside activities because Maret School is paying for the use of the field.
  • I wonder would you all have made this decision if you children or grandchildren attended Jellef? I look forward to my question being answered by the D.C council. Until then I guess we will just watch the students that attends Maret play on the field just wishing that we could play there too.
