Mayor Bloomberg and City Hall: Ban the sale, possession and trade of Shark fins in New York City

Mayor Bloomberg and City Hall: Ban the sale, possession and trade of Shark fins in New York City
The Issue
Millions of sharks are caught and killed for their fins every year around the world to meet the insatiable demand for foods such as shark fin soup. Populations of these economically and ecologically important fish species have declined by as much as 90% in the last several decades, and many shark populations now teeter on the precipice of extinction. New York is the largest trading ground for Shark fins and Shark products on the East Coast of the United States, and a ban on the sale and possession of Shark products in the State was not addressed by Albany's legislature despite the cries of thousands of fervent campaigners. Please join a wealth of New York City councilwomen and men, local, national, and global environmental groups, divers and ocean conservationists in banning the sale, possession and trade of shark fins and shark products in New York City before it's too late!
