Wallingford needs a natural park at 33 Cherry St : No Parking Lot!

The Issue

In regards to the property, owned by the people of Wallingford, at 33 Cherry St, the former site of the Brothers restaurant:
Whereas: There is not excess demand for parking in the area,
Whereas: This property should be developed for the benefit of the public,
Whereas: Paved surfaces interrupt the natural flow of rain water, creating more stress on town storm water systems,
Whereas: Paved surfaces create heat islands when summer sun is reflected back into the air, contributing to the creation of smog and bad air quality in the area,
Whereas: Increased public parking will increase the cost of winter snow clearing,
Whereas: Cars entering and exiting a parking lot will negatively affect traffic on
a block that already backs up past the traffic light at the corner,
Whereas: More parking would be in opposition to the 2016 Wallingford Plan of Conservation & Development,

We the undersigned residents of Wallingford demand that plans for a parking lot on this property be withdrawn and this area converted to a natural green space for use by the public for the following reasons:
- Natural green space with native trees and landscape provides drainage and storm water absorption, saving the cost of water treatment.
- Snow removal will be unneeded or minimal for walkways.
- Space could be used for outdoor dining for nearby restaurants.
- It will create an attractive feature for rental properties on the nearby block.
- Vegetation can be designed to reduce train & traffic noise pollution.
- A well-designed landscape would have minimal maintenance costs, possibly done by volunteers from local organizations such as the Garden Club or Boy Scouts.
- Native vegetation will have a positive effect on air quality.
- Natural features can provide a cooler place for Wallingford residents.
