Protest Opening of Kew Gardens Prison
The Issue
As many New Yorkers know, Mayor de Blasio is planning to close Rikers Island down due to structural problems, and overall being unsafe for both inmates and staff. While this is a good thing, the mayor's plan to move the inmates to various prisons in other boroughs is not good, particularly the one in Kew Gardens. The plan for the Kew Gardens prison is not only extremely economically draining, but it will also severely hurt the Kew Gardens community. For example, this new prison, where inmates with felony charges such as rape, murder, and child molestation, will be two blocks away from P.S. 99, where K-6th graders go. Kew Gardens is a family oriented neighborhood, which is no place for a prison filled with extremely dangerous criminals that will threaten the everyday life of Kew Garden's residents. To add on, Rikers Island is in fact located on an island, where it can do no harm to surrounding communities. Move it to all ready established neighborhoods, and a lot of damage will be done. Obviously, this change will not only impact Kew Gardens, but every neighborhood where these inmates are being moved into. The damage this will do it catastrophic, and will affect so many people all over NYC. I know as a Kew Gardens resident myself that I do not feel comfortable with a prison four blocks away from my house, and the places I go daily. I doubt that others feel differently, and I hope you can support the cause.
