Budget negotiations are down to the wire.
Call Speaker Corey Johnson to ask that city council include $7m for community compost (GrowNYC and the Compost Project): 212-564-7757. Please thank him for his historical support of composting, and ask that he continue to support it.
If you would rather email, here is the one-click link.
What this funding does:
- Provides 90 community composting employees with jobs
- Turns 5+ million pounds of food scraps into compost, where it's processed locally and then the finished compost is given to community gardens for free
- Supports 193 food scrap drop-off sites (e.g. at the farmers market)
- Trains community composters (including 91 master composters)
- Assists community gardens & community compost sites to create self-sufficient composting systems and help with any composting issues
- Funds the environmental nonprofits Lower East Side Ecology Center, Big Reuse, Earth Matter NY, local Botanical Gardens and GrowNYC’s Greenmarkets, so they can continue their important composting work
If we don't secure this funding, there will be no publicly funded composting options in NYC for at least a year.
