Close live poultry markets in NYC!
The Issue
Live poultry markets are a cruel, selfish and inhumane practice. Animals are kept in small cages with little access to fresh food and water. Many of these animals have been taken away from their parents at a young age and have never felt a gust of fresh air. When the time comes to kill the animal, they are violently grabbed by their necks and thrown into the room where their life will tragically end. The markets have to follow basic sanitation and animal care laws, but these laws are often very vague and can be bent and twisted by the owner of the market. The only law recently passed in New York City is that markets need to be 1,500 feet away from a private residence, however, this law does not help the suffering animals, nor does it help close the 80 plus markets in New York City. If no one ends this cruel practice, animals will continue to be tortured and killed, only blocks away from your apartment. We ask that the NYC government takes a stand and puts an end to this terrible tradition.
