On January 12th, 2020, an opossum was viciously stabbed in the eye by an unnamed assailant on Chesire Place, a residential street in Staten Island, N.Y. The opossum died the following day after desperate attempts by rehabilitators to save its life. Although the suspect was charged with assault for kicking a person that same night, no animal cruelty charges have been brought against him for this horrific and unprovoked attack. 

Please sign and share this petition asking Mayor Bill Deblasio, District Attorney Michael E. McMahon, Congressman Max Rose and Governor Andrew Cuomo to seek that animal cruelty charges be brought against this suspect and that the maximum sentence allowed under New York State statutes be sought in a court of law. Opossums are non-aggressive and beneficial animals who do not harbor rabies and pose no threat to humans. Opossums benefit humans by eating many animals and insects that we consider pests, including ticks, rats and mice.
