Ban "one time use" plastic bags in Peabody, MA

Ban "one time use" plastic bags in Peabody, MA
The Issue
Peabody seems to be the last North of Boston community that hasn't taken a step toward improving our local environment by imposing a ban on "one time use" plastic bags.
One time use plastic bags are used in dozens of stores and restaurants all over our city, but they are no longer recyclable in our weekly bins. One time use plastic bags can take over 100 years to break down in the environment. Plus they are responsible for drain blockages, litter and issues with our recycling vendor.
Everyone I've ever talked with about banning plastic bags in Peabody thinks it's a great idea...but no one seems to know how to implement it. Most people think it is something the city council will implement eventually, but I've never heard any plans for this kind of change.
I'm a big believer in just asking politely for what you want, so I created this petition.
I am asking for you to sign the petition to tell Peabody Mayor Bettencourt and the Peabody City Council that it's past time to implement a ban on these menaces to our local environment.
We know that the mayor and the city council listen to us when we--the citizens--rally about a cause; they are not unreasonable people, but they need to hear that Peabody citizens really do care about their environment.
Banning plastic bags in Peabody is a cause that is long past due and could be fixed quickly and easily. The mayor just needs to hear from us why it is so important.
Please help me unequivocally tell the Peabody city government that we care about our environment and can no longer support the use of one time plastic bags in our community.
Thanks for your help!
Most sincerely,
Ritamarie Cavicchio, Peabody resident
