Death Penalty should not be restored in Philippines

The Issue

Because of what happened to the victim of a rape with homicide case, Christine Lee Silayaw, the issue about restoring Death Penalty have arose again. Lots of netizens in different social media sites have been arguing about its restoration.

Another case happened in 20th century. George Stinney Jr. was the youngest person sentenced to death in the 20th century in the United States. He was only 14 when he was executed by electric chair. During his trial, until the day of his execution, he always carried a Bible in his hands, claiming for innocence. He was accused of killing two white girls, Betty of 11 years old and Mary of 7, the bodies were found near the house where the teenager resided with his parents. At that time all the jurors were white. The trial lasted only 2 hours and the sentence was handed down 10 minutes later. The child's parents were threatened and prevented from giving him gifts in the courtroom and then expelling them from that city. Before the execution, George spent 81 days without being able to see his parents. He was trapped in a solitary cell, 80 km from his city. He was heard alone without the presence of his parents or a lawyer. He was electrocuted with 5,380 volts in the head. 70 years later, his innocence was finally proven by a judge in South Carolina. The beam with which the two girls were killed, weighed more than 19.07 kilograms. Therefore, it was impossible for Stinney to be able to lift it, let alone be able to hit hard enough to kill the two girls. The child was innocent, someone put everything together to blame him just for being black. Stephen King was inspired by this case to write his book #TheGreenMile, which was taken to theaters in 1999.

The death penalty is not proven deterrent to future murders.

Those who believes that deterrence justifies the  burden of proving that death penalty is deterrent. The overwhelming conclusion from years of deterrence studies is that the death penalty is,at best no more of deterrent than a sentence if life in prison . The enrich studies have been widely  discredited. In fact, some criminologist such as Williams Bowers of Northeastern University maintain that the death penalty has the opposite effect that is society is brutalized by the use of the death penalty and this increases the likelihood of more murder. Even most supporters.

Another reason why the death penalty should not be reinstated, is because when the wrong person has been convicted of ah crime, and has been executed,it is a mistake that cannot be made undone,if the wrong person was convicted, and sentenced to life in prison ,compensation can always be paid to the victim of injustice. A dead person stays dead.

A wrong did will never be right by doing wrong too.
