We are asking the City of Vancouver to develop a third option for the Cornwall/Point Grey Road corridor that keeps Point Grey Road open in both directions and minimizes negative impacts on neighbourhoods along the entire corridor and on the broader community.
The City has recently put forward two options for changing transportation patterns for cars, cyclists, and pedestrians along the Cornwall/Point Grey Road corridor.
One option includes closing Point Grey Road at Macdonald and re-directing at least 10,000 cars per day to already busy neighbouring arterials and quiet side streets.
The second option includes making Point Grey Road one-way westbound from Macdonald to Alma, which would involve re-directing thousands of east-bound cars onto neighbouring streets.
Both options will also result in more dangerous intersections, increased traffic congestion, and difficulties accessing residences, businesses, and community services.
Both options were developed by the City without sufficient consultation with those who would be most negatively affected by these changes. It appears that these options were selected with no consideration of their enormous impact on community livability.
We believe that a third option is possible and will address the City's goals of increasing safety and accessibility for cyclists and pedestrians along the Cornwall/PGR corridor. We also believe this option will be cost effective, less disruptive to transportation patterns in the whole community, and will result in far fewer negative effects for residents, businesses, and community services from Burrard Bridge to UBC.
