In 2015 a team of scientists, including scientific scholars from our own University of California Santa Barara conducted the first global analysis of the harmful production, use, and waste of all plastics ever made. Their findings discovered that since the mass production of plastic in the early 1950s, humans have contributed to the production of 8.3 billion metric tons of plastic on our planet. So far, 6.3 billion tons of this has already become waste, which now resides in our planet's landfills, oceans, and other natural environments. Every single piece of plastic that was created, manufactured, used and thrown away in the last 60 years still remains on earth and will continue to exist in our environments for thousands of years.

At least 8 million metric tons of this debris finds its way into our lakes, streams, and oceans every year. Once in our oceans, plastic can never fully decompose, it only breaks down into tiny particles of microplastic. At this rate, by 2050 there will be more synthetic waste in our oceans than fish. With this large amount of non-biodegradable trash floating around in our oceans, fish and other marine life mistaken plastic for food or end up entangled in plastic debris. This is extremely harmful to marine wildlife. In fact, plastic waste can kill millions of sea creatures, creating damaging effects on our ocean's ecosystems.

During the 2017 International Coastal Cleanup, some of the most common plastics that were found were plastic bottles, food wrappers, plastic containers, straws, and grocery bags. Now, how are we going to keep this debris out of our oceans?

This petition aims toward the goal of banning all single-use plastics on our local beaches in Santa Barbara County. Banning single-use plastics in our area would keep our coast clean and protect our local marine life from being exposed to these dangerous substances. Sign this petition to grab the attention of Mayor Cathy Murillo, Santa Barbara City Council members, the Santa Barbara Sustainability Committee, and the Santa Barbara Legislative Committee to enact a law that prohibits single-use plastics, such as, plastic water bottles, plastic straws, plastic food bags, and plastic utensils on our beaches.

Make a big difference in our oceans with the small act of using reusable eco-friendly products when you're at the beach!
