Part of Seaboard Freight Terminal to be saved! moved on site
On Thursday Savannah City Council voted 5-3 to approve the siteplan for 703 Louisville road with some modifications. A deal apparently brokered by the mayor after public outcry will see the "head house" portion of the building moved on site. Van Johnson who's district the building is in along with Estella Shabazz and Tony Thomas voted against the place which would only preserve about 20% of the building. Van Johnson made comments that "we don't need to do this again" referring to a need for a process to protect buildings like this that are outside of historic districts.
Thanks to everyone for signing the petition and helping save some of the Seaboard! We should all look around in our areas and see what buildings we think should be protected from demolition. Lets keep reminding our city council and election candidates to do something to protect significant historic buildings all over Savannah!
