To you all who have signed our petition: THANK YOU! We have come so far! And now are asking YOU to spread the word, again, even more. We have over 750 signatures and are aiming for 1000 by the end of this week.
The City Council will likely be voting on these two proposals this coming Monday, April 11th, after which they will go to the mayor's desk. The outcome of this vote will set the precedent for the future of our neighborhoods. Please share our petition, spread the word; this is important! We are not against change, BUT we need a HOLISTIC, COMPREHENSIVE, neighborhood planning process. We need new studies (sociological, environmental, geographical), new evaluations, and a new approach that includes everybody, especially those of us who are traditionally left out of the process. Ron Schiffman, a city planner of 60 years stated at a lecture yesterday at the Brooklyn Library, “rezoning is a Trojan horse for developers to use to create expensive housing with a few affordable apartments in tow…” We cannot let our neighborhood be bought for a handful of affordable new units when thousands of working-class neighbors have already been driven out, and when we know that the unaffordable units will cause even more displacement in the years to come. Council Member Hudson, along with community members, sent a letter to the head of the City Planning Commission calling for a community planning process, so we are making headway in this fight! Please keep sharing this petition with more of your neighbors so we can keep up the pressure on our elected representatives and on the relevant agencies to fulfill their obligations to our neighborhood.
