Reverse retirees insurance cuts

The Issue

In a 7-5 vote, Tuesday of this week, the mayor and 7 councilmen cut promised and earned benefits to retired Memphis government employees.  I feel they chose this group because they knew the elderly were easy victims and could not retaliate as they are no longer employed and most are unable to work after giving 25-40+ years of their lives for the City of Memphis.  They chose the elderly and are forcing them to take up the slack for the city's administration mishandling funds.  These elderly people retired with low pay many years, some decades, ago and they paid into a private pension and insurance fund, thus they cannot get into Medicare or social security.  The council voted for these poor people in their golden years to cough up $1800.00 a month for insurance.  Many of these devoted retirees are in nursing homes or their mental alertness has declined and they won't even understand what has happened.  Many will be forced to drop coverage which will mean they will not seek proper medical treatment.  Any resulting deaths should be considered premeditated by Councilmen Lowery, Morrison, Hedgepeth, Ford, Flinn, Strickland, and Conrad's support of slashing these poor people's promised benefits.  SHAME ON YOU!  For many of the retirees trying to keep their insurance will put them in a poverty level.  Great job City of Memphis!

This vote affects more than just the elderly.  We have many still working who will have to contribute more for insurance while the City still contributes some.

Tell me, KEMP CONRAD, how does a 90 year old go out and get enough quarters for social security and qualify for Medicare?
