Gun City is to open a new gun shop in Napier later this year. The franchise, along with a sports retail store, is set to be built on a site next to Big Save Furniture near Pandora Pond in Ahuriri.

Gun City has a reputation for fighting police and government on its right to import semi-automatic weapons and as recently as June last year was preparing a court battle against the New Zealand Police over their refusal to allow the import of AR15 semi-automatic rifles and parts (1).

Currently there are multiple gun shops in the Hawke's Bay and another does not appear required to meet the local need for guns. The closest of these, Hunting & Fishing, is less than 2km away from the Gun City site.

The Napier City Council granted a land-use consent to expand a multi-unit building in Ahuriri in July last year (2).

Napier councillor Maxine Boag has been reported as saying that Gun City had a right to open up shop unless the community had an issue with it doing so.

"In my own personal view I don't like guns so I won't go to the store when it comes, but at this stage Gun City is a well-known business and, as a councillor, I work for the community and if the community don't want a gun store to move to Napier then we will look into what we do," Boag said.

So let's help show Maxine Boag that our community sees no need for another gun shop in Napier, especially not Gun City.
