The Issue

In Shelbyville, IN, there has been an incidence too close to home. My precious daughter fell prey to a sex offender, a harrowing event that has impacted both her life and ours. The punishment set for the culprit was miserably inadequate, a bitter reminder of the leniency frequently shown towards such criminals.

In the United States, 1 in 9 girls and 1 in 53 boys under the age of 18 experience sexual abuse at the hands of an adult (National Sexual Violence Resource Center). However, many offenders easily evade the serious punishments they deserve. This laxity in our legal system is a significant factor enabling this macabre cycle of crimes to continue.

We propose the maximizing of sentences for individuals convicted of sex offenses. This measure is critical, not just for retribution, but primarily for the prevention of subsequent offenses. Studies suggest that the implementation of harsher punishments can serve as a powerful deterrent, helping reduce the incidence of these heinous crimes (National Institute of Justice).

Convicted sex offenders need to face the gravity of their actions to ensure that justice is achieved, potential criminals are deterred, and survivors can begin the process of healing. The time for change is now: let us enforce stricter penalties that truly reflect the severity of these acts.

Will you stand with us and protect the victims and potential victims in our community? Please sign this petition and join our call for action.
