On Wednesday, June 10, 2020, it was announced that outdoor organized sports teams would be allowed to resume meeting and practicing beginning June 15, provided they followed county guidelines. FOOTBALL, RUGBY, SWIMMING, and DIVING were notably told that they were not allowed to begin practice.

SWIMMING AND DIVING are STRICTLY non-contact sports, and there are national protocols that are in place to ensure swim teams are following guidelines to limit the spread of Covid-19. Swim teams and diving teams should be allowed to resume practices for our hundreds of keiki who practice with our well-organized swimming and diving clubs in our county on the same day that other outdoor sports begin practicing. The pools are currently open to lap swim using the guidelines provided to the county by USA Swimming and the Maui swim teams. 

FOOTBALL AND RUGBY are contact sports, but so are basketball, soccer, and baseball, although those other sports are accidental contact sports. FOOTBALL and RUGBY should be allowed to resume skills and drills practices that do not require touch. If these other outdoor sports are meant to follow guidelines that limit touch, football and rugby teams can be expected and trusted to do the same.
