Mandatory Carbon Monoxide Detectors in Schools

The Issue

Watch the Report

In 46 states, carbon monoxide detectors are not required by law to be placed in schools. A recent incident at our local middle school in Georgia  made the ramifications of this lack of requirement very real for hundreds of parents. Here's that story as told by Tiffany FitzHenry:

"One of my kids came home sick around noon on Monday, headache, general yucky feeling. She fell asleep for the rest of the afternoon, kinda unlike her but okay, she must be really sick, so I thought. What I did not know, as I allowed her to sleep unattended all afternoon on the couch, was that she was being poisoned all morning with CARBON MONOXIDE at her school. The very school my other child was still at for the rest of the day. A school just like the one your kids go to if you live in the United States of America. My other child came home at the usual time on Monday complaining of a horrible headache for the next two days. We found out via email from the school Wednesday morning that it was CO. My heart sank. Had I known this I'd have sought medical attention for both of them. I don't rush to the doctor for headaches and tiredness, do you?

As a parent one of my jobs is to keep my kids safe from foreseeable, preventable dangers. It's the school's job to keep them safe from foreseeable preventable dangers during the school day. No parent wants to feel like they didn't do their job in protecting their children who depend on us for things like preventing them from being poisoned. They can't do this for themselves; they're not in charge, we are. And as parents, we're in charge of the people we place in charge of the safety of our children. And the people in charge let us know that in our state CO detectors are not required by law in public buildings like schools. Without the knowledge that there were no CO detectors at my child's school, I was not able to effectively do my job as a parent. I failed my kids, however now that I know about this ludicrousness I can fix it. After this CARBON MONOXIDE leak happened at my kids middle school in Georgia this week, I discovered that basically all of our children all across America go to school every day without CO detectors."

It's time to make a change and pass legislation that requires all schools to have carbon monoxide detectors installed. It's a relatively small expense considering children's lives are at stake! Please help keep our children safe and sign & share this petition!
