Northumberland Further Education Funding Crisis
This petition is to make you aware of our concerns in respect to the current policy of the coalition with regards to Further Education (FE) funding. Cuts in funding are estimated at just less than £1,000,000 next year and more for the following year.
Our concerns are mainly centred on:
-
Funding of Apprenticeships – Northumberland is at a disadvantage as it has lost all of its major non-public sector employers, with the most recent being the Alcan aluminium smelter. There is a high level of small employers in the county that struggle to cope with the bureaucracy of the apprenticeship model and therefore do not participate.
-
24+ loans – South East Northumberland and Berwick experience high levels of unemployment which discourages the taking up of loans. It is a challenge to encourage participation in education for adults in the area and the loan system acts as a barrier especially when there is little hope of employment in the area.
-
Lack of funding for 19+ seems unfair and year on year cuts to this stream are preventing those students engaging in education, achieving qualifications and improving social mobility.
-
Currently educational funding appears unfair. Education funding has been ring fenced but is disproportionately geared towards schools.
Northumberland College is the only college based in Northumberland; the college has achieved outstanding success rates over the last few years through the dedication and commitment of its students and staff. The current level of cuts in funding will seriously damage the sustainability of this college and the quality of the output.
The community of Northumberland will suffer this ‘one size fits all’ funding approach to FE. In an area that has lost all of its industry, yet again the feeling of isolation is being felt in the only region of the country where unemployment is still rising.
We call for a change in Government direction in respect to the future to FE funding if we are to continue educating and training our community.
