Some of you may have seen the article in today's Daily Telegraph about the steps NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde are taking to reduce the nearly quarter of a million pounds annual bill spent on mobility equipment. They are going to team up with a local company, clean and test returned mobility equipment and reuse them. Why can't this be done across the U.K.? Anyhow I have now written to the Health Secretary and copied the letter in an e mail to my local Conservative representative. The action I am urging the Health Secretary to take does not require a debate in Parliament and it is well within his powers to instruct the relevant bodies to launch a fresh nationwide programme to educate the public, health workers, Pharmacists, Care Home Managers and staff etc., to make them aware of the current level of waste, the causes of this waste, the impact of such waste, ways of avoiding the waste, and what can be done to donate certain items to charities/ aid agencies to further reduce waste and help such organisations who are struggling to raise funds and maintain resources. If I don't receive a response within a reasonable length of time I will follow it up but in the meantime I urge my supporters to talk about this issue with friends, family, colleagues, people you meet at the bus stop - and share the petition as much as you can so even more people can sign and take part in this campaign.
