The Italian Government is moving on with project and funding (partially guaranteed by UE Transport Commissioner funds) of the High Speed Train connecting Milan to Venice. The construction of this new line will impact the Southern side of Lake Garda in a devastating manner for its delicate environment. A relevant part of Lugana DOC vineyards will be destroyed.
Lugana producers consider the High Speed Train project to be impacting the area in an unsustainable manner. The new tracks would destroy a considerable part of the existing vineyards and limit future growth.
The effect on the delicate ecological and environmental balance would be intolerable, especially in an age in which the importance of preserving the environment should be at the base of any decision that can reflect on future generations.
No amount of money can possibly compensate the next generation for what they will lose.
For this reason, we ask the Italian Government to utilize the existing railway tracks to cross the 9 km of the Lugana area, preserving the narrow land between the Southern shore of the Lake Garda and the Northern area of the hills from new upheaval.
We know this is a viable solution, supported by competent technical analysis.
Using the existing rail tracks means the high speed train will have to slow down for a few kilometers, while passing through Lugana area.
We think 4 minutes of delay is an acceptable price to pay for preserving a unique terroir and an area which is under UNESCO heritage evaluation.
Lugana producers know they can protect this unique land from being used irresponsibly and ask for your support in sharing this petition.
Our precious wine culture gives us the ideal way to focus on the environmental balance and to care for our land and future.
