Require Matt Reeves To Include the Batcave T-Rex In "The Batman"

The Issue

Batman has appeared in 15 theatrical movies. And yet, none of them can rightfully call themselves Batman pictures, because they lack an core element of the character, a key piece of DC canon which every true Dark Knight fan recognizes as crucial to Batman's identity--the Batcave T-Rex.

The Batcave T-Rex was a mechanical dinosaur which Batman fought in Batman #35 (1946), "Dinosaur Island," created by a theme park developer and then hijacked by a crime lord while Batman and Robin spent 36 hours on the island as a publicity test. (It is not, as often mistakenly believed, the movie prop Batman fought in Batman #10, "The Land That Time Forgot.") The dino was moved to the Batcave's Trophy Room, first seen in Detective Comics #137 (1948), and has been an iconic piece of the Batman's scenery ever since.

Tim Burton, Chris Nolan, Joel Schumacher--these are talented filmmakers, and yet they all chose to WILLFULLY IGNORE the Batcave T-Rex, despite the fact that it has endured for more than 70 years on the pages of Batman comics. They've brought us the Alfred, Mr. Freeze, the Batmobile, the Utility Belt--but where is the Batcave T-Rex!?!

The T-Rex and the Batcave Trophy Room are essential to understanding the Caped Crusader and his motivation--no true DC fan would ever dispute this! Batman must keep souvenirs from all of his greatest adventures, and his time fighting dinosaurs and robot cavemen on a theme park island gone awry is just as important to the character's mythology as his struggles with Bane, the Joker, or Two-Face. If you're not going to include the Batcave T-Rex, you might as well not include the Dark Knight at all.

Matt Reeves has a chance to correct this egregious error. He says he wants to tell a "definitive Batman story"--but we'll soon find out if he was telling the truth, or just playing to the crowd.

It's time for Batman fans to ensure that the character is correctly portrayed on the silver screen, by saying in a united, clear voice:

NO BATCAVE T-REX? NOT GOING TO THE MULTIPLEX!
NO BATCAVE T-REX? NOT GOING TO THE MULTIPLEX!
NO BATCAVE T-REX? NOT GOING TO THE MULTIPLEX!
