Pay Student Nurses & Midwifes Whilst On Placement

Pay Student Nurses & Midwifes Whilst On Placement
The Issue
Student Nurses and Midwifes now more than ever need financial support from the Government.
Student Nurses and Midwifes are expected to work in our NHS whilst being trained. They need to make up 2,300 clinical hours of hospital hours, as stated by the Nursing and Midwifery Council, so that they can join the register. These people love the practical experience they get, but the fact that they aren’t paid makes it feel like they're just free labour for the NHS.
With the outbreak of Coronavirus this has added to the pressure they face. Can you imagine having to go into this immensely stressful situation, working on the frontline, giving unrivalled and total dedication to their patients. Whilst sharing these essential duties with their qualified peers all for zero pay!
If our Government is serious about "saving" our NHS they need to seriously address the way Student Nurses and Midwifes are treated. Although they have changed the way new Students education fees will change from the next years intake, nothing has been done for these existing students. This means that all current Healthcare Students are no only working for free (a form of modern slavery?) they also have to pay commercial rent and Student fees of over £9,000.00 per year, how can this be fair?
We are in a terrible situation with the spread of this infection and our NHS is basically reliant on these Students to keep frontline services going, again with no pay!
How can it be fair for our Government agree to pay 80% of certain workers salaries whilst expected Student Nurses and Midwifes to work for nothing? Student nurses need to be included immediately in this Governments announcement to pay workers wages.
