Class all Polio survivors as vulnerable in light of new government Covid-19 guidance

The Issue

Over 1 million people in the UK have been warned about their vulnerability to Covid-19 due to various health conditions. Despite survivors of Polio and PPS having an average age of 72 and suffering from severe respiratory issues the government has neglected to deem those effected as in the at risk category.

Many survivors are also  living with disabilities and other underlying health issues. These heightened dangers to their health combined with their lack of mobility has led to many having to self-isolate for the prescribed 12 weeks by the government for fears of their own health. By not automatically classing someone effected by Polio as at risk the government are in some place denying them the ability to obtain food delivery slots and access to essential services that could protect their health and safety.

There are 120,000 people in the UK suffering from these debilitating conditions and we believe it is the government’s duty of care to ensure their best interests and well being are kept at the forefront of decision making.

We urge the government to add people living with the effects of Polio and Post Polio Syndrome to the list of vulnerable of people so they can get the help they truly need at this difficult time.
