Elderly Care Home residents in the UK have been separated from their families for five and a half months. Some care Homes have allowed visits to take place at a distance in a garden or outside setting. Family members often play a major role as a key worker, social worker, medical coordinator. The stimulation through conversation and affection from a loved one is vital to the resident's well being and stability. The regular physical contact and reassurance from a loved one is immeasurable.

It is a hard choice to surrender a loved one into care causing guilt for the loved one and a feeling of abandonment for the resident. Dementia patients have suffered and deteriorated from the isolation and separation. Residents with a limited understanding of the severity of covid-19 but with a level of awareness are now suffering and pining for contact with their loved ones.

My mum has Parkinson's disease but has great communication and social skills. Her Care Home has been a loving, social and stimulating environment. Now there are no activities, no music therapy, no hairdresser. Regular testing of relatives would allow this cruel and mentally damaging heartache for residents and relatives to be managed.
