Stop the Consolidation "Strategy" by the CSCU Board of Regents

The Issue

The Board of Regents of the CT State Colleges and University (CSCU) system has voted to proceed with a "strategy" of consolidation of the community colleges' administrations, and to remove administrative offices and functions such as Human Resources, Financial Aid Processing, Information Technology, Institutional Research, Fiscal Affairs, and Facilities from university campuses. This will fundamentally change the structure of the colleges and universities, so much so that the very names "university" and "college" will hardly be applicable. It will affect the functions and missions of our campuses, which are communities and systems of their own, and turn them into branches of a business corporation. Our community colleges and state universities serve the working classes, and we are the most racially and ethnically diverse of the public higher education institutions. The title for this consolidation is "Students First," but it will put students last. This strategy will harm our institutions in ways similar to the harm done in Wisconsin, and will create a burden of lasting debt and anti-government feeling well into the future.
