Support School Closure for Eid in Massapequa

Support School Closure for Eid in Massapequa
The Issue
Millions of Muslims in the United States and nearly 2 Billion Muslims worldwide celebrate Eid al Fitr and Eid al Adha every year. The holidays signify the end of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan as well as the pilgrimage to Mecca, known as Hajj. These two days are typically celebrated with morning prayer followed by family time and feasts with loved ones. Muslim students in the Massapequa community are often reluctant to take the day off to observe because they are afraid of missing out on classwork, homework, Tests, Quizzes, Athletics, and other educational opportunities. As a growing population in the community, one that by rough estimates accounts for about 1.1% of the Massapequa community, we ask that the district recognize Eid al Fitr and Eid al Adha as a holiday in the district the way NYC did last year and the way the Syosset School Board did this year. Students in this special and diverse community should not have to choose between academics and celebrating their holiday. Please sign the petition to show your support to have Eid al Fitr & Eid ul Adha as official Massapequa School Holidays.
