Just over a year ago we received the incredible news that Massage Envy was changing their policy because of your powerful voices. When we all work together to make a change, anything is possible.
Recently, I heard about another Change.org campaign that felt a lot like my experience with Massage Envy. TripAdvisor, the world’s largest travel site, is under fire for covering up sexual assaults reported against staff members at businesses it promotes on its site. It’s doing so by burying bad reviews and putting unreasonable requirements on sexual assault survivors that prevent them from warning other travelers.
K, who has chosen to remain anonymous, was raped by a tour guide with stellar reviews on TripAdvisor. When she turned to TripAdvisor for help, they ignored her, just like Massage Envy first did me.
I know you care about survivors’ right to be heard. Will you add your name to K’s campaign?
K says, “My assault was deeply traumatic and probably one of the worst things I’ve ever experienced. But the humiliation I was put through when I turned to TripAdvisor for help was almost worse. When I asked for help warning other tourists about my attacker, the company simply suggested I leave a review. Not only was this solution woefully inadequate to warn other tourists – my one star review would quickly get lost among minor complaints about the guide – but it required me to relive the painful details of my assault and out myself publicly in a place where my assailant could likely find me.”
An investigation by the Guardian revealed that K is not alone, and this has happened to at least 40 more people who have had to leave first person reviews of businesses, many of which still have 4 and 5 stars. TripAdvisor needs to do better.
Read about K’s story here, sign the petition, and share it. I know that if we helped Massage Envy make a radical change, we can do the same thing with TripAdvisor.
