In Massachusetts, it is currently illegal to tow off of personal watercraft (commonly referred to as Jet Skis). This includes tubing, water skiing, wakeboarding, etc. This law is supposedly in place to keep people safe. In this situation, towing from a personal watercraft is not any more dangerous than towing from a typical motorboat, and if anything, it is safer due to the fact that personal watercraft have no exposed propellers that could injure anyone in the water. Also, the only risk is to the watercraft riders and the people being towed. It should be an individual’s choice whether or not to partake in activities that pose a potential danger to themselves, particularly when it does not put anyone else in more danger than towing from a typical boat. This safety concern is also clearly not widespread as Massachusetts is the only state to have a law against personal watercraft towing.

The solution to this problem would be to amend the law. Citizens should be allowed to tow off of their watercraft. Of course there should always be safety regulations to ensure that people act in a safe manner, but these regulations are already in place.

Particularly in light of recent events, many people are worried about their summer plans. If we are still in quarantine, being out on the water with family is a great way to get outside and have fun without risking getting near others. If you have a personal watercraft, this summer could be your chance to have fun with your family and learn a new skill like wakeboarding.
