Masons law Implement stronger bail conditions for dangerous driving
The Issue
On a tragic day, my 11-year-old son was knocked down and killed by a driver who was freed on bail, only to repeat his reckless actions. Our family's life was devastated by the loss, and we believe that the current bail conditions and sentencing for death by dangerous driving are insufficient and inadequate.
Every day, families like mine face the heart-wrenching loss of loved ones due to careless and dangerous drivers. Statistics from the Department for Transport show that in the UK, there were over 1,700 reported deaths due to road traffic accidents in the last year alone, with a significant number linked to dangerous or reckless driving. The current legal measures are not enough to deter these offenses, leading to repeated harm and devastating consequences for too many families.
We need to advocate for stronger legal parameters. This includes revising bail conditions to ensure that those charged with dangerous driving resulting in death are not released until trial, especially if they pose a demonstrable risk to public safety. Additionally, sentences for those found guilty of death by dangerous driving must be proportionate to the irreversible impact of their actions. Longer, mandatory driving bans, combined with substantial custodial sentences, would act as a stronger deterrent.
Reforming these laws not only serves justice to victims and their families but also enhances road safety for everyone. We must urge the UK Government to prioritise the reassessment of these legal frameworks to prevent further tragedies. Let no other family endure such loss without hope for accountability or change.
