I am writing to everyone today to express that I support a mask mandate. An opt-our provision should only be considered for individuals with unique medical conditions that would warrant a letter from their Florida licensed primary care physician.

Anything less than that is in direct conflict with recommendations from local, state, and national medical and public health officials. The current response as outlined by Shirley Brown in her current email response is insufficient and is proven to be an ineffective approach that does not help to keep our children safe, out of quarantine, and learning without interruption.

The data and facts speak for themselves, and were clearly and unequivocally presented at the workshop on August 17. Both Sarasota Memorial Hospital and All Children’s Hospital have reported consistent increases in Covid-19 cases of all ages. While adults have the option for an additional layer of protection through vaccines, the vast majority of our students do not, leaving masks as their first – and likely only - layer of defense.

The mission of Sarasota County schools is met by “preparing students to achieve the highest learning standards by engaging a high quality staff, involved parents, and a supportive community”.  We rely on the School Board of Sarasota and our district leadership to take the necessary steps, no matter how difficult, to ensure that mission is met.

Thank you for your time, and for your unwavering commitment to keep our children safe.
