The Issue

As a dedicated pet owner, it brings me immense joy to see my two small dogs frolicking at Marymoor Off-Leash Dog Park, a renowned sanctuary where canines of all sizes can run free in a vast 40-acre open space. However, as the owner of two tiny companions, our visits are often overshadowed by concerns for their safety amidst larger, more energetic dogs.

This issue isn't unique to my family—many small dog owners experience similar anxiety. While Marymoor’s Off-Leash Area is spacious and beautifully maintained, it lacks a designated area for small dogs to play without the risk of being overwhelmed or injured by larger dogs playing, wrestling, running after balls or chasing each other. The absence of such a separation often leaves owners like me hesitant or altogether discouraged from visiting.

Statistics from the Humane Society indicate that incidents of injuries in mixed-size dog areas are significantly higher than those in segregated areas. Every year, small dog owners voice their apprehensions about potential accidents, yet a viable solution remains unimplemented.

By creating a dedicated play area for small dogs, Marymoor can enhance its inclusive environment, promoting a safer, more enjoyable experience for every park visitor.  Plus, we pay TAXES to maintain Marymoor yet we are not being included in the overall enjoyment of the park.   King County Parks and Recreation, along with the S.O.D.A. (Save Our Dog Area) Board of Directors, I have personally contacted both the Department of Parks and Recreation (Justin Camputaro and S.O.D.A board member Judy Trockel, with both responding with thank you for your suggestion but nothing will be changing at the off-leash dog park.

This requested change does not require any additional funds to be allocated. By utilizing a portion of the existing 40-acre lot, the park can install clear signage, ensuring a welcoming space where smaller breeds can play freely and owners can relax without the constant worry of potential mishaps.  We are not asking for a fence to be installed, only an open area off of one of the trails that would solely be for small dogs.  Owners of large dogs would have full access to the unleashed area except for this small dog area.

Join me in advocating for a safer, more inclusive Marymoor Park. Please sign this petition to urge King County Parks and Recreation, along with the S.O.D.A. Board, to prioritize the installation of a dedicated small dog play area. Together, we can create a positive impact on the well-being of our beloved pets.
