The Issue

As a resident of Maryland, the burden of soaring utility bills is a concern that hits home. Like many of my fellow Marylanders, I have felt the sting of excessively high rates when the utility bill arrives each month. This isn't just about balancing a checkbook; it's a matter of economic survival for many families in our state. The necessity of utilities like gas, water, and electricity means that families have little choice but to pay whatever rate is demanded, often forcing them to make difficult sacrifices elsewhere.

The issue lies in the outdated and monopolistic nature of our current utility regulations and providers. According to the Maryland Office of People's Counsel, the state's residential consumers are paying significantly above the national average for electricity, gas, and water services. The Baltimore Sun reported that the rates have consistently risen over the past few years without a corresponding increase in service or innovation.

It's time for Maryland to take a stand against these unaffordable rates by advocating for utility reform. We propose that Maryland's Public Service Commission immediately reviews and revises the regulations governing utility rates. By implementing more competitive practices and encouraging renewable energy investments, we can ensure not only more reasonable rates but also a sustainable future for all Marylanders.

Moreover, establishing a transparent pricing model and maintaining accountability within utility companies can prevent uncontrolled rate hikes. We urge those in power to prioritize this issue and take concrete steps toward a more equitable and just utility system.

Sign this petition to demand that Maryland's leadership takes action. Together, we can advocate for a future where utility prices no longer strain the pockets of hardworking individuals and families across our state.
