Support Maryland House Bill 409
The current Maryland statute concerning furnishing alcohol to underaged individuals punishes any person found guilty of violation fines up to $2,500. It needs to be enforced with severer penalties.
Despite that it has been ratified in 2009, parties and trips featuring underage drinking are still frequently heard, some of which led to tragedies with life losses. There needs to be a real deterrent that can wake up some parents who mistakenly believe that they can sponsor a safe underage drinking party or trip.
Alcohol may have a special appeal for young people who are at their life stage of adventure. It is often one of the risks they like to take in the search for their identity and friendship. An adolescent’s environment affects both the appeal of alcohol and its availability. We can only change the environment by holding the adults accountable.
Academic studies also find that reductions in alcohol-related traffic fatalities are attributable to the presence of strict law enforcement.
It’s time to change the law by increasing the penalty for violations and including a jail sentence. We hope you all will support the House Bill 409 initiated by Delegate David Fraser-Hidalgo and pass it.
