Pier450 started this petition to Maryland legislators and regulators

We need your help.

Pier450 opened in September 2020, more than two years after our journey began to restore this beloved property. One that had stood empty for years and may well have been lost to the community had we not decided to take it on. Our goal from the outset has been to rejuvenate the old Scheible's restaurant and motel, creating a casual destination location serving fresh food in a setting worthy of its natural beauty.

Understandably with a 70+ year-old property, there were many infrastructure issues to be addressed and requirements to meet. We have spent thousands of man hours and hundreds of thousands of dollars already — upgrading, gaining permits and even addressing legal changes, plus obtaining a variance, all required to enable us to modernize infrastructure systems. We’re trying to make the environment better in so many ways. Installing a very expensive new septic system is the most obvious example.

But, there is more to do to get there. State regulations, in particular, that lack innovation make preserving services to our rural area next to impossible. Projects continue to be delayed awaiting long-promised approvals. These delays coupled with requirements for extremely expensive and sometimes unreasonable “solutions” are very costly to Pier450, as they are for many trying to live, work and play on the land or businesses they own in the "Critical Area," which is much of Southern Maryland.

The people of Southern Maryland deserve those places to live, eat and play. If Washington, DC — which also drains into the Chesapeake Bay — can have an entire new waterfront of apartments, restaurants and entertainment, why can’t we have even a few options? At Pier450, we are trying our best to navigate this difficult regulatory environment. Still, we are vulnerable to a web of governing bodies whose collective goals are not aligned with positive outcomes for small businesses and for the people they serve.

We are simply asking for your voice of support — so that we may share with those in power the value that Pier450 has brought to this community: a lovely place to eat and gather; jobs for many in the community; a reliance on local farmers and other suppliers; a destination that helps drive tourism in the county; and the contribution of tax revenues to the local treasury. Your patronage and encouragement in our first year has been the foundation of our success. We hope you will lend your signature so that we may demonstrate the community's commitment to our continued ability to serve you — and, in the process, help to take a stand for other businesses facing similar challenges in serving our community.

We cannot thank you enough.
