Countless people have resorted to suicide by jumping from the bridge in Clarysville, MD. In an effort to deter people from jumping off of the bridge, signs were placed with the contact number for a crisis hotline. While it is uncertain how many people have used this life-saving resource, it's tragically clear who hasn't. I know placing a fence along this bridge would physically deter people from jumping from it and one that is erected with the engineering design to prevent someone from climbing it would save lives. When we look at the bigger picture of the suicides we have to consider the devastated family members of the victim, the traumatized witnesses including bystanders or those who incidentally come upon a body in the road, law enforcement, EMS, fire fighters, etc. These incidents cause a ripple-effect and the damages are life-changing for those involved.
