Reform our judicial practices concerning plea bargains, suspended sentences and bail/bond.

Reform our judicial practices concerning plea bargains, suspended sentences and bail/bond.

The Issue

We, the undersigned residents and other concerned persons of the 12th Judicial District of Maryland are frustrated and angry with several practices engaged in by the local judiciary:

1) We feel that entering into plea bargains with violent and/or repeat offenders, especially in those cases concerning children and weapons is a constant danger to the community.

2) We feel that a judge's suspending all or part of a sentence for violent offenders and/or repeat offenders and those convicted of distributing drugs contributes to further the crime in this area.

3) We feel that the system of bail/bond is broken and is in need of reform and overhaul.  Too often we see those arrested back on the streets within hours because little or no bond was set.  This, despite the suspect's having a criminal record and with seeming disregard to the violent nature of the offense.

4) We feel that we have an exemplary law enforcement community, but are frustrated because their efforts are for nothing due to the above flaws in our local system.
